Noise in 706 rearend

I have a 706 that has had a noise in the rearend since I got it 3 years ago. It is most prevalent when you are in reverse. It sounds a lot like a dozer does when it is backing up. That steady clunk, clunk, clunk. When in forward gears there's no noise at all, except occasionally in high range 3-4 gear you will hear something.

Most people have said the reverse gear has a tooth gone, probably from someone engaging the parking brake while the tractor was still rolling. This makes sense to me. Someone else just told me that he had the same noise and it ended up being an axle bearing.

Before I tear into it, I'd like to be pretty sure what I am going after. Also, how difficult is a 706 rear to work on. We've been into Fords and JD before, but not the Farmall.

Thanks for the help.

Brian

I came across something kinda similar at the dealership I worked at, and he had shift fork issues. One thing I would do if I was you is to be sure the park adjust is set correctly, cause if it comes down to a park adjustment, you saved alot of time. Worth the few minutes in my eyes....

I agree with the other posters about a tooth being off rev gear, but to address your concern about a bearing, you should pay close attention when you change the hyd filter as to how many filings are present, I have a 1066, for years the filter compartment was always very clean, then i noticed metal shavings and not long after a bearing growl. pay close attention to this and you will get some warning when you have bearing trouble.

My 706 has done this for years in rev.

You've definetly got a tooth knocked off the reverse driven gear, caused by someone dropping it in to park while it was still moving. You can either remove the reverse idler cover from the left side, or remove the range trans cover/shift deck underneath the platform to inspect it. It is the rearmost gear on the top shaft. It is a big job to replace it, but it is pretty easy. If you can handle a JD Syncro-Range, you can definetly handle a 706. You will need a few special tools.

Had a 756 that had that clunking sound when backing downhill especially in third rev. A guy that really knew & repaired reds told me what it was -I totally forget but it was not as serious as a broken tooth. Ran the756 for years ; backed down a long drive often; the sound became familiar; neighbor has the 756 now on his dairy's manure spreader-still going strong & clunking in third rev.

Brian if you only hear in reverse I would say the reverse gear has teeth missing. The problem is as you said someone put it in park before the tractor stoped moving. The bad news is reverse is the last thing out of the rear end and the first thing back in.

Hi Brian, it sound like a tooth is broken by the park brake fork. You can check it by the cover on left side in front of the left rear axle. Drain oil, remove the cover and in neutral turn the wheel. Check the gear on pinion shaft for a missing tooth. It's a major rear axle work to change this gear. You have to remove the final drives, bull gears and split the tractor.
