I was looking for a late model Ford 8N when I found this neat little Farmall A. Since the A has no hydralics and no 3 point hitch what can I do to use 3 point implements? She's a neat little rig so I'd hate to part with her. The A has the housing for a two PTO system but has no shaft for the pulley. It 's capped off. Can you attach a pump to the second PTO shaft to run hydralics? Also one rear rim has been welded where it bolts to the hub numerous times. Where can I pick up a good hub?

Jim,

I just took a home-grown three point hitch setup off the A I'm working on. It didn't fit very well, and looked pretty ugly. But, it was functional -- the previous owner had rigged up a small hydraulic pump and reservoir to run off the generator belt up front on the left side. (As a tradeoff, he had removed the generator, electing to just charge up the battery every so often.) The rear frame he used for the 3pt looked like it came off something else and had then been retrofitted (with a little oxy-acl torch work ;-) to fit.

If you'd like, I'd be happy to send you some pics of the setup.

I have a BN, which is a narrow front end cousin of an A. Implements are scarce, and fabbing a 3 point for it would be difficult, and not nearly as satisfactory as just getting an N series Ford. I got a 2N, and that tractor is unbelievably handy for being 62 years old. My BN is destined to be a firewood trailer hauler, and possibly a belly mower tractor, and if I find one, a front mount snowplow, but I think 3-point isn't worht it.

As for hydraulics, a lot of guys have used a power steering pump off the fan belt, or belt pulley. Me, I like the big old hand lever. I guess I'm a luddite.

Take Care
Steve
