I ended up reading some archives about the Hitachi import alternator. I went and picked one up from Napa today. They are a bit more pricey then the delco, $51 + $22 core charge. I compared it to the Delco and it is much smaller. The first thing I noticed was the sheeve was closed up to small for an A belt so I removed the shaft nut with a 22MM and air impact gun. I then removed the nut and the lock washer. I put the lock washer in between the two sheeve halves using it for a spacer(works perfect) then applied some loc-tite and ran the nut back on. I test fitted it a couple times and found the original gen bracket would work great in the upright postion instead of turning it over for the Delco alt. I drilled out the holes in the bracket to 3/8 and also drilled out the holes in the alternator to 3/8 and rethreaded the tension bolt hole to 5/16. I cut some sleeves out of some steel tubing I got from Home Depot and used a piece of all-thread for the pivot rod. I then used the existing tension bracket from the old 12v gen and relocated it to the front of the thermostat housing by drilling and tapping a new hole(theres a place for that). It looks GREAT in place and has plenty of room for adjustment. I believe this style alt would work well on an H without having to alter the hood. I took some pictures but Im not sure how to post them on this discussion forum. I will post one on the Farmall pic post and several others as this this project is winding down. Thanks to all that gave me great advise on the last post.

What is the model of Hitachi Alternator and how many amps does it put out? Looks like a great job! Good to find another alternator that doesn't require cutting the hood to fit.

What is the NAPA part number for the alternator? I have an H that I want to change to 12 volt and I want to be sure I get the right one.

Thanks, Bob

Found this post when searching the site:

I see the Mike J is asking about this so thought it might just be time to put this on the board again.

I have been putting this small alternator on several tractors, replacing generators under the hood.

It is a Hitachi #14231 which was used on 1978-79 Nissan 620 pickup with a 2 liter engine and a 1980 Nissan 720 pickup with a 2 liter engine. At NAPA it is part #2138130 - cost is right at $50 + core.

The alternator is 4 1/2" in Dia. and 7" in length and will go right on the orginal mountings on the tractor. Use an 8" x 3/8" bolt and some pipe for spacers. Being Hitachi means that it is METRIC. You will need to drill out the mountings to 3/8". The tension adjusting bolt is also metric thread.

The alternator is a three (3) wire set up which can be converted to one (1) wire. There are spade conections labled S & L and a BAT post conection. The L spade is for the idot light and can be disregarded. Use a jumper wire from the S spade to the BAT post and you are good to go.

The pully is a split type that you can widen using a spacer (once again metric). You will need to use a disc type lock washer and some locktite because there won't be room to reuse the split lock washer that comes with it.

There is a built in regulator and a resister to keep the battery from feeding back to the alternator.

This is a sweet fit under the hood that I have used on H's, M's and W models, also Cubs and many others.

Hope this is of some help.

GOOD LUCK

I used the alt. from a Dodge D-50 pickup on my 300 Farmall, and it worked great. The alt. is made by Mitsubishi(sp?)HTH Marvin
