This is just bringing to the front the disc we were having about my 460 running like crud.
So far I have cleaned and checked the fuel line from the tank. I picked up a dist cap/ rotor/plugs/ wires/ points and condenser.
Old ones didnt look bad but I might as well know where I am at with it.
Took the dist off and checked the advance wheights. They look fine and move free.
Also picked up a carb kit. will be doing that.

No vac leaks found and the heat riser moves free with the spring.

Will see what happens when I get those in. I will do a comp test as soon as I find my tester.
Maybe I will get lucky and fix it. If not I cant think of any other possabilities but the Valve thing that Chad had mentioned. If it is so be it.

ANy one got the tune up specs for a 460 handy? Be a few days before the manual gets here. SO far thats happened with 2 tractors. Cant wait for the manual to start fixin.

Kelly: You've crossed the line, as did IH in 1958 when they came out with these 6 cylinder gas engines. The first time I ever saw a 460 gas in 1958, I called it a dud. The quality is not there in these engines. By 1958 agriculture was moving quickly to diesel power, and that is where all the resources on engine development were going. IH probably were a bit slower than most to realiae this.

On the quality item, I wouldn't be surprised it the bare engine block of a 300 is heavier than the 460 bare engine gas block.

I have only ever seen a couple of IH 6 cylinder gassers in my lifetime. Here in Canada we abandoned them very quickly because of fuel cost and efficiency. When I came to YT, some 4 to 5 years ago, one of the biggest surprises of my lifetime, was that IH actually sold the numbers of these that they did. I couldn't believe it.

Will see what happens now. I have 656D money tied up in 2 50 hp gassers now.
After I get this 460 running good. Time to see if I use both enough to need 2. If not and can get by with one maybe I sell the 400 and the 460 and get a good 656D.
The hard part is I never feel like selling any of my red machines once I get them. Sort of get attached. Wife suggested I didnt need the H any more. I almost cried. No way I am parting with the H.
Oh by the way, Gassers are real common around here. Gas was still cheap in the 50's and 60's.
Of the last 20 656's I have seen 17 of them were gassers. Might just be that every one is dumping them too.

If anyone ever used starting fluid to help start a gasoline Int, there is a good bet an intake manifold gasket got blown. With it running (outside) spray a light mist of starting fluid near intake manifold gasket(s). If it runs smooth-bingo. Maybe not the safest thing to spray...An intake manifold gasket problem will cause them to run rotten. Of course, don't overlook the obvious- maybe it needs valves & or rings. Got to find the compression guage.

Kelly, I have a 460. I have known this tractor since it was new. It has a tendency for burning valves, and they also are a bit cold blooded it seems. Winter will find the carb icing. I keep mine for sentimental reasons, but there are better models out there.
