I have a 44 M with the LHDB switch with a regulator on the post. With all my limited knowledge, I am assuming (and I hate that) that she used to have a cut out relay? Otherwise why would this four position switch be required? The lights are not working and before I get the voltmeter out, I want to understand how it should work.

It probably originally had a cutout relay. With the regulator, no wires from the generator circuit need go through the switch. The high and low positions are just "off".

If you have a regulator, the L and H will both give the same charge. If you want, you can take the switch apart, and convert it to a 3-position ODB switch. definitely not necessary.

The L stands for Low, the H for High, the D for Dim, the B for bright. Low and High, for the amount of charge the genrator is putting in the battery.
