Looking for first (gas) tractor. H, F-20 or ?

I'm a steam guy and I own a Russell steam traction engine, but I'm thinking about getting my first gas tractor (Farmall) to tinker with and for a little medium duty use; hauling, plowing, whatever. I've been reading posts here for a few weeks and I'm reading several good Farmall collector and tractor restoring books. I've looked at A's thru M's at our museum in Vista, CA. The F-20 and H seem about the right size/HP for me. My friend's F-20 looks and sounds nice too.

Do you guys think an F-20 or H would make a good first tractor? I don't need a show tractor, buying a little rusty (running or not), but nearly complete one seems okay. An older restoration is okay too. What are the good sources for finding old Farmalls in or near CA? Comments/suggestions?

Thx

If you are used to steam tractors, you probably won't be disappointed with an F20. However, the H is a more modern tractor -- electric start, hydraulics, 5 speed transmission, etc. It all depends on how you want to use it. Many people consider the H as the replacement for the F20, IH advertised it as the replacement for the F12/14.
