Has anyone used another type of alternator for M conversion other than the Delco style with success? Seams that the Delcos are a bit big not leaving enough room for adjustment and they lay right up against the hood not letting it latch good.

The common internally regulated alternators will have these connections in common:

1. A large BAT stud - where you connect the wire coming from your ammeter/voltmeter/battery.

2. An exciter wire connection. Sometimes called "I" (ignition). This is the same as the "terminal 2" connection on the Delso 10SI. One-wire alternators do not have this - but those are a specialty breed.

3. Some alternators will have a "S" (sense) terminal. The Delco CS121/130 alternators will have this, but it may be hidden under the connector boot. It is already connected internally, so you do not need to connect it. You can connect it if you wish to take your reference reading right from the battery, but this is not necessary. Most Nippondenso and Hitachi alternators will have this connection and it must be used. Treat it as you would if it were pin 1 on the Delco 10SI.

Good luck with this - you'll find that you can use almost any internally regulated alternator. You don't need to find one with a large output. Tractors just do not need the extra size.

On my above post, I have pin 1 and pin 2 reversed on the Delco 10SI description. Think pin 1 when I say pin 2, and pin 2 when I say pin 1.

Hi jonesy,

Not sure if it would help, but I've put a Delco 10-SI on both a C and a 400. I'd be happy to send you pics of how they turned out and what sort of brackets I had to make for it. If so, shoot me your email address.

The Delco will work OK on an M. I have a photo that some knowledgeable board contributor made available. If you give me your email address, I'll send a copy, with thanks to the originator.
