I am just finishing restoring a 1940 Farmall B. I have noticed while driving it that it has a lot of noise coming from the left side final drive. The right side seems quiet Anyone know what could be the cause of the whinning coming from the left side. Your help is been great though this project. Thanks in advance. Steve in IN.

I just finished restoring a Farmall B last fall. I only put 85-90 weight oil in the final drive and the left final drive is real noisy, especially in road gear. I am thinking of changing to heavier weight oil to quiet it down. Those spur gears they used in those old tractors are naturally noisy to some extent. Mine like yours seems to be quieter on the right side, unless you can hear the left one better as there is no sheetmetal between you and the final drive. I know my bearings are OK, because I checked all those before I reassemble things. Roger

I would take the cover off and have a look and then replace with new 140wt and see it that helped.

If it seems high speed it's might be a bad outer bearing on the bull pinion drive shaft.

Let me know what you find out - my 1942 B also has a terribly loud "whine" in the final drive area. I put 140wt oil with little to no help. The person I bought it from said its been like that forever and never caused any problems. Is it because of straight cut gears????
