I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem I have been having with my IH 424 utility. It starts and runs fine for a while but after it heats up it begins to bog down and will only run if I pull the choke all the way out. I have tried nearly everything in the owners manual to no avail (fuel lines, filters, coolant levels, cleaning the carb without taking it apart etc). I have heard that the clicking noise made when you turn the key to the on position is the fuel pump and this tractor has recently stopped making this noise. Is there any truth to this? And would it still start and run without the fuel pump working? ANy advice would be very helpful as I have hay cut waiting to be baled. Thanks

Yes, the 424 gasoline has a fuel pump that is electric. When you turn the ignition on and before you start the engine, you should hear a clicking sound. Could be a carburetor problem, or you may have fuel pump troubles, keeping you from getting enough gas. Also, the 424 has a solenoid on the carburetor that shuts off gas to the main jet when you shut off the ignition. The purpose is to keep the engine from "dieseling" when you shut it off. If that solenoid is faulty it could be restricting gas flow too. In any event, it sounds like a gasoline supply problem or a carburetor problem.

Sounds like you need to rebuild/replace the carb. I have an oliver 77 that did the same thing and I ended up replaceing the carb and it run great now
