Super-A Front Axle

I just installed the adjustable front axle on a '53 Super A and noticed that the tie rods appear to be angled up from the stearing box to the stearing arm. When I look at the tractor from the side it appears that the stearing knuckle is canted slightly with the wheel forward. Are the positioning holes in the axle main shaft drilled on a slight angle? If so, should the front wheels be canted toward the front or the back when viewed from the side?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you might have put the right side on the left side and vice verses.

On the original A the the front axle had a caster angle of 5° and the camber was 2½°. I think this would still be the same on the Super A.
Hope this helps.

The spindles should tilt back a little so it steers easier. You may have installed the axle wrong. Your car is built the same way. There was even a plate for the H and M to tilt the spindle back a couple of degrees. There was even a production change on the B to make it steer easier.

Russel: You say installed. Was this reinstalled, or are you building something from parts? Are the bolt holes on the axle adjustment in good shape? Can you see where someone may have rebuilt and redrilled holes in axle.

Standing in front of tractor the tyrods should be close to straight line with one another. Upright spindle shafts should be close to 90 degrees in relation to ground, fore and aft. Can you post a photo of this?

There are some differences in front ends over years, but I think that is all in tyrods before and after aprox 1951. Center steering control arm and shaft in box had some changes about same time.

I am just rebuilding the tractor so all of the parts came with it. The holes do not appear to have been redrilled and they are not elongated or out of round. I do not have a photo but the spindle shafts appear to be angled about 2-3 degrees with the lower end (wheel) forward. Both spindle shafts appear to have the same lean. This lean also puts the knuckle of the stearing arm a bit higher than it looks like it should be to have the tie-rods line up. It looks like if I were to flip the main shaft over the lean would be slightly back at the wheel and that would put the stearing arm at about the right height to make the tie rods line up.

It's just hard to believe that something this subtle would be built into a tractor of this vintage. Every other assembly I have worked on has been dead simple.
