I do a lot of commercial mowing of lots and acerages. I currently use a Ford Jubilee for brushhogging. However, on many properties I could do a better job with a finish mower. It seems like I may be able to buy a good used Super A with a Woods belly mower for a little more than the price of a new finish mower. Question...what is the horsepower on a Super A? Can it really run a 5 ft belly mower ok on grass that is about 6 inches deep? What kind of cutting job will a well maintained Woods L59 mower do? Am I going to have to run the tractor a lot slower than the Jubilee (4 to 5 mph)? Need your help really bad on all of these questions. Thanks! DirtCo

Go to the six ft. as thats what 1st gear is for setting the mower up correct and sharp blades is always first when setting up.

I agree with the others, the Woods L59 on the Super A will do a superb job. Most of the time, you will mow in 2nd gear. Six inch high grass in 2nd should not be a problem. I used the same Woods L59 for 20 years, mowing around 5 acres of lawn. First had a Super A, and then for the last 11 years, a 140. If you have anything steep to mow, use extreme caution. Going up a fairly steep incline while mowing will likely require 1st gear.

Like Sam, I am new to this Woods mower. I've had my Super A for years. I bought the Woods 59 from a guy that had it on a Farmall B. He now has one of those new Kubota Zero turn mowers. He said Kubota may be fast but doesn't do the quality work of a Woods. The family presured he to the new mower.

Personally I have never seen any mower do the quality work of the Woods. A section of my grass I let grow to 6" to 8" every time. This ground is a bit rough so I set the blade 4" off the floor and travel in 1st gear. From the highway it looks like a top quality lawn. I find that very rarely do you ever see clippings. I could travel faster, but I tend to think a bit of extra time on the Super A, is much better use of time than time spent sharpening and straightening. I don't mow a large area, thus the time is not a big issue.

I know a guy who has a garden center, mows a lot, on perfectly level ground. He tells me he mows in 2nd and 3rd gear. When the grass is lush and green, growing fast 2nd is order of the day. 3rd will look a bit ragged. Later in summer as grass growth slows, 3rd works fine. With 2nd and 3rd he is talking close to 3.5 and 4.5 mph respectively. Many Super A's are running Woods 306 which are a 72" mower. Power is no problem.

This is the first season for me and my Super A with a Woods 59. HP is around 20, and I'm pleased to report that it does an excellent job. I mounted turf tires on the rear and implement tires on the front to minimize making ruts in the lawn. I cruise in 2nd gear most of the time and drop down to 1st if I come to a particularly high or thick spot. Turning radius is terrific even compared to much smaller mowers.

On the down side, I used to use a hydrostatic mower and got used to easy direction changes. With the A, I had to modify my mowing pattern to avoid stopping and shifting into reverse, as the mower also stops during the gear change. Trimming around small objects is somewhat less precise, and due to the offset you can't see the left front wheel at all but you get used to it. Lack of power steering makes quick moves tougher but also builds shoulder muscles too!

Good luck and hope this helped.
Sam

DirtCO: The Super A with a 5' mower is a mowing Muldoon! HP is around 20, give or take a couple. I mow with a Cub, which is the next size down, and a 5' mower. Finish is excellent, provided your blades are sharp and the mower is properly set up and maintained (which of course goes for any other mower as well). One other thing you will like about the Super A is that the offset design allows you to see what you're mowing, as you look directly down at where the mower is operating with no tractor in the way. 4-5 MPH is probably a bit high for finish mowing with a Super A--you're going to do most of your mowing in second gear, which is slower than that.

Super info guys. This souds like what I am looking for! I was afaid that the 20 HP would not do that well with the 5ft mower. My Jubilee has 31 horses and does well with the 5 ft brush hog, but I would not fare so good with a 6ftr. Obviously the belly mower uses less HP to mow with. I have found parts for my Ford tarctor are not hard to find and are resonably priced. Is this true with the Farmall also? I could buy one of those Japenese tractors, but they are complicated. Too many wires and lervers etc. plus they lack the nostalgic value of the great older tractors as well as the resale value. If I gotta do the work, I may as well enjoy it! Thanks, and God bless.....
