We have a 584 4x4 that leaks from the outboard end of the power steering cylinder shaft. The leak occurs at the junction between the part that attaches to the left wheel and where it threads on to the end of the piston shaft. Over the years we have tried replacing the seals with factory parts and home made gaskets and tightened the sucker with legths of pipe on the end of our wrenches. Sometimes the leak stops but over time it always returns.

Has anyone experienced this sort of thing before? Perhaps something is out of alignment that is twisting the cylinder as it strokes? There doesn't appear to be damage to the hardware itself but it is baffling how the leak always returns. Maybe someone could share a photo of this area from their tractor so we can verify that the general arrangement is as it should be.

Thanks in advance!

Jamie

Jamie, this isn't going to help specifically but my experience is that when seals keep going out, something is taking them out...a burr on the shaft, a bent shaft in the cylinder...but something and you have already mentioned it, perhaps the shaft is binding...I have a 584 but not a 4x4 so I can't really help you more. Check toe in and other alignment as well as your hardware and good luck..Mike in Exeter Ontario
