I do have to disagree the dealer I worked for did custom plowing1468 and 5/18 plow never had to go below 4 gear in sime steep hills in northwest Iowa and it was not bad on fuel.

The 1468 sold for only $3250. It has a cracked exhust manifold on one side and bent exhaust pipes. The duals on it were shot and less than 50% on the other tires. The hours meter showed just over 6000 hrs. No work had been done on the engine.

Don't know how well the engine lasted, but they were fuel efficent one's I know would rake hay on less fuel than an H and as for power they would run over the 436 in same tractor 1466 or 1566.

Really?

Even our local IH dealer advised my dad against buying one back when he bought his 1466, when we rented a 1468 in place of our broken down 1206 we found out why so few where sold. No more power then the tractor it replaced (1206 not 1466) and seemed to spend most of its time feeding at the fuel truck. Neighbor did buy a 1568 brand new in the spring, traded it that fall - same reason.

They might be fuel efficent with no load (but why run a 160+ hp tractor if your not loading it up?), but they suck it down when under load faster then any tractor we had ever placed in the field - including our 4568 (a tractor not exactly known for its fuel economy either).

The 1468 and 1568 were the V-8 two wheel drive tractors. Where to find them, i dont know, seems like i've seen alot in junk yards though.

From what I've been told, the engines were not very fuel efficient and they didn't last long either. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

They where also low on torque compared the I6 on the 1466 & 1566. They are out there, just few and far between. Lebo Kansas has a tractor show every year and one guy there owns three of them he's picked up over the years.

For a really serious V8 go look at the old 4568 & 4768 4X4 tractors, 800+ cubic inches - turbo charged!!

dhermesc, We use an IH 4568 to handle a 30 ft JD 750 no-till grain drill, and there are places that the drill teases but not challenges the limits of the tractor. We've tried a Massey 1500 and White 4-210, both with 3208 Cat engines and they wont handle 30 ft, but the Massey does great with a 20 ft 750.

The one we had was a real horse, with 8 twenty inch wide tires and locking differentials it could really hook up all that power. It was used mainly on our plowing disk, field cultivator and soil saver. Only problem was if it ever started to spin it was like riding a bucking bronco.

We never had any problems with the engine other then the starter - seemed like we went through at least one a year 4 years straight. The clutch was replaced twice in over 8000 hours of service so all in all it was a pretty good tractor.
