I seem to have solved a problem - but don't know how? ... had antifreeze in my oil a couple months ago (late winter) which made me think the head-gasket was gone. Talked to my mechanic friend and described the situation - he tells me it is the o-rings which is not uncommon on the D206 (wet sleeve) - big job! Problem is after I had changed the fluids (oil and rad) and have worked it since I have not had any sign of antifreeze in my oil (even after 10 hours of bush-hogging in 85 degree heat last week!) ... probably put on 50 hours since the winter on this tractor ... can these rings pop in and out of place - or am I just buying time here?

My 2 cents… Don’t want to scare you, but from personal experience I’d say you are just buying some time. I had a 966 (414 CID) that showed some obscure signs of water in the oil over the winter. The next spring and summer everything looked ok, but when colder weather hit during fall harvest the o-rings let loose so bad that I could smell the antifreeze from the breather vent when the engine was running. When I tore the engine apart (had about 5600 hrs on it) there was a little cavitation on the sleeves and block near the o-rings. My guess is that in spring and summer the engine was under consistent loads keeping the engine temp near normal while it was running. The metal expanded, the o-rings got more flexible, and the cavitation areas sealed up. When the weather cooled off again, the metal shrunk a little bit, the o-rings got stiffer, and the tractor was neither under a consistent load nor operating temp as much, contributing to varying operating temps and leaking. Hope yours is different, but since you asked…

I think your bang-on - I just sounds better in this case getting bad news from someone else! Thanks for the 2 cents - it just confirmed the fact that if I want to keep the old girl I will need many many more cents!!
