Engine Overall in a 51 Farmall H

Hi all. I just came back from the repair shop and I was told that it was going to cost me around $1,750 for an engine overall. They said #4 cylinder is bad (missing). They did a complete tune-up on it. I just bought the tractor about a month ago for $1,600. Am I better off keeping it and trying to have friends help me with the overall and it might take about 6 months (I'm in no hurry) or do I do what the mechanic says and just sell it for what I can? He seems to think I can get about #2000 for it becaiuse there is absolutely no rust and no oil leaks. Just wondering here. Thanks.

Hi Sarge, You will like that old tractor even more by redoing the engine yourself. Take pictures of the engine before and as you disassemble the engine. They may come in handy
when you're doing the assembly. Take some notes too. Make a note as you remove the main bearing caps so they can be reinstalled correctly. This also applies to the connecting rod caps. The numbers on the caps and rods usally face the camshaft side of the engine.

Do not just throw nuts and bolts into a box as you do the teardown. Put all nuts and bolts from one section of the engine into a box
and mark the box as to where they were removed.
An example would be the head bolts, then the rocker arms and bolts. Pan bolts in another box.
This saves time during assembly so you do not need to hunt for the correct bolts or nuts.

I would get the engine degreased "cooked" once you have it stripped. Have the machine shop to check the crankshaft and install new cam bearings. They may recommend using a new cam shaft. Redo the cylinder head too. Find a good machine shop in your area. Good Luck, Hal

Did they say what was wrong with your #4 cylinder ? How low is the compression compared to the other cylinders ? Does it come up when you add a couple tablespoons of oil ?

If it is just a bad valve, it could be fairly cheap to fix. I wouldn't spend $1800 to completely rebuild the motor until I knew a little more about why it was missing.

If you have any skill with wrenches, you can do it yourself. An H is an easy tractors to work on. They were designed to be simple to fix. Like others have said, get yourself some manuals and a parts book.

I just want to say Thanks to all of you who have replied. I was hoping I could count on you and you came thru. I have decided to take the most advice given, and go ahead and get my hands dirty and see what I can do here rather than leave it at the shop. I have a few friends who have said they would be more than happy to help me with it since I am not very mechanically inclined. But again thatnks to you, my confidence has been raised. I did my H's motor a little while ago and the cost was sort of like this. around $700 or so from a machine shop for:

crankshaft turned .010 on rods and mains
new cam bearings
rods turned
flywheel machined
engine kit with pistons,pins, rings, bearings, all the gaskets, sleeves (pressed into the block).

add $120 or so for new clutch and pressure plate

add a couple hundred or so for head rebuilt

i think no matter what it costs (up to a point of course) its worth it to do it youself for the stuff you learn and the satisfaction you get.

Hi Sarge, Do what Captaink says. Pull that engine off and get it cooked. You will be able to have the crankshaft measured and machined if needed. Get yourself a good repair manual. There's a lot of talent that is posted on this discussion board if you need help. You will save money by doing it yourself and you will know
what was put into the engine. Good time to replace clutch too. Rebuild or replace oil pump.

lets see - 1600 for tractor. 1800 for engine (sound high) that is 3400 for a tractor that might bring 2000. HOWEVER, if the engine puts it in top shape there is not a NEW 12000 tractor on the market that will out perform it (imho)!!

If I can rebuild the engine on a Farmall A, then you can certainly rebuild your H. I had no experience and learned by doing. It cost $200 to have my head redone by a machine shop. They boiled the block for $35, ground the crankshaft and gave me new bearings for $185, and the new piston and sleeve set cost right at $300. But, you may not really need to go that far.

I agree that it is probably a bad valve that is causing your miss. If you go to the work and expense of overhauling it, spend a little more money and time and take the block out. Unless you know that the last time it was overhauled the block was out and cleaned thoroughly, it is well worth the time and expense to take it to a machine shop and have it “cooked out”. I have theorized that many times heads cracked on M’s and H’s because there was too much crud left in the block preventing good coolant flow. By the way, If you cook it they will need to install new camshaft bearings, but again, just another prevention to bad oil pressure causing bigger and more expensive problems down the road. MY 2 cents worth.

If you are inclined to do it yourself get a shop manual and maybe a friend that has done an overhaul before.

Does the tractor smoke,if not you might get by with a head job,or the most a in frame overhaul,new rod bearings,cylinder sleves,rings,probally 450.00 in parts,usally around here about 500.-600. labor,Im not a mechanic by far a i have rebuilt a h,and2 f12 and have never had any problemsIll bet you that you have a couplebad valves

Sarge,

I always look at these things this way.

With a dead hole, for all intents and purposes, the tractor is totally useless to you for any work at all; it is nothing more than a neat pile of iron.

Plus, if you are going to sell it and are honest about it, it "might" bring maybe $350 or $400. Nobody else wants that 3-lung problem either.

You can forget the $2K.

So, stew on it for a day or two and forget the past; face it, yesterday is gone. Then when you are ready to decide, do you want to buy the tractor again for another $1750?

I would. You'll see a heck of a lot more money in your lifetime, but there are only so many 51 Hs out there and you will know what you have. Hang on to her for another 20 years and you'll see all your money back.

'Course, I'm a fanatic when it comes to red tractors too; I wanna save 'em all.
