Second Tractor Needed

Hello all,

I'm thinking of adding a second tractor to my newly hay making hobby. I only make hay off of 20 acres. I use some of the hay myself feeding my small herd of herfords and do sell some to the local horse neighbors. I have a Ford tactor which is 50 hp and is able to handle all my hay equipment pretty well. I'm looking for a rake tractor and to be used towing loaded flat racks back to my farm (about 2 miles). What would be the best letter series farmall that would be the best buy for my needes and for my shallow wallet. How concerned should I be about finding a tractor that has a faster 3&4 gear for raking hay?

Thanks
Matthew

My vote is for a SH. I bought an H for raking, but would fall asleep going around the field. SH is conciderably faster as posted below. I don't have any experiance with a SC, but think it would do a good job with a rake as well on fairly flat ground.

Hi Matt, My choice would be a Super C for raking.
Happy raking, Hal

Pb blaster works great! If that and a hammer don't get it, soak the cylinder in pepsi or coke.

Matthew: I would tend to go lighter than others suggested, however it will not likely save you any money, as you will probably buy an H or SH for less money than a SA or SC

I raked all my hay for years with Farmalls SA and a 130, often had two rakes going. I also had a 300. I can tell you the SA, SC, 130, 230, etc will rake circles around the larger H, SH or 300. Now they aren't going to haul as large load of hay as the H, SH or 300. But you know something, I have hauled hundreds of 20' wagons with 200 bales on, into my yard, a 20% incline, with the Farmall 130.

In round numbers, third in the H is 4 mph, fourth, 5. The Super H has a 5 mph third and fourth is 6 5/8 mph.

An H is an excellent rake tractor. Handles nice; is quiet, smooth, little vibration and about a grand. Nicest rake tractor I ever used (and I've raked with a dozen or more - I'm an old codger) was an Int 574 row crop Diesel. Plenty of gears from which to choose, nice ride with 16.9 tires, and turned as sharp as a pony tractor. Just a nice handling tractor. A Super C will rake and steers easy.

I have raked a lot of acres with an "A", "C" and a "574". I could adjust the NH 56 rake while sitting on the seat of the "A" The "A" had a faster ground speed than the "C". However, the "574" was best for ground speed and ride but sucked a lot more fuel. It boils down to priorities.

If your land is fairly level, i'd recommend a Farmall H which I have used to rake hay before, and have been very happy with the performance. I don't think i'd go any higher than an H though, you don't really need to, plus with gas prices the way they are now, a smaller engine is better! Just my opinion ---Jeff

Matthew, I agree with the other posters - H sounds about right. About faster gears for raking, depends on your hay but I've seen a lot of leaves beat of of dry hay by raking to fast. With alfalfa if you see a cloud of dust coming off the rake your losing valuable leaves and the best part of the hay. My nickel Dick Davis

Dick: You nailed that,no point in leaving those leaves in the field. Alfalfa probably the most sensitive but all hay crops will do it.

That is the reason I always liked the SA and 130, on 60" wheel tread they have a lot more center clearence than the larger tractors, great for big volume windrows. and it is much easier to keep wheels off the hay. I always went to direct windrow with 9 foot haybine. On heavy alfalfa it was one turn with rake and then baler. Weather cooperating of course. Only one way to have 20% protein alfalfa hay, and that is have all the leaves.
