I have a 460 gas that has started hanging up between gears (has done it twice now). Any one have any advice on where or what to look for? Could it be the shifter forks or the shifting lever itself? Once when it hung, I was able to pull the cover in the front part of the trans and take a small crow bar and pry the front most (left) fork rail backwards and got it unstuck. The second time, it was the other (right) fork, and we had to take another tractor and chain and gently "shake" the tractor a bit to get it unstuck. Any advice greatly appreciated!

The end of your shift lever is most likely worn. Build it up with the welder, then grind it down to shape. You want it to fit the notches in the shift forks with as little play as possible.

Welcome to the 460. My guess is the shift forks/mechanism wear to a point then no longer clear the last gear you were in.
My solution was not a fix but a work around. Keep your screwdriver handy and weld washers on the bolts that hold the shifter down so they're easier to get out.
Try to be REALLY careful whe you shift, and make sure you get to nuetral before you go to the next gear...it's easier to get out if you don't jamb it into two gears.
You can try another shifter from a dead tractor but this is really common, and the other tractor may have the same problem.
The shifter would be fairly simple to rebuild IF you can find the parts. Being careful as you shift will help for quit a while. Just keep the screwdriver and wrench under the seat.

Good Luck..... ..Mike
