I was out touring on my dad's 1940 Farmall A this afternoon, and at one point I tried to shift from reverse to 3rd, and it will not release from reverse at all. When I press down the clutch i can roll the tractor (which still runs fine). Any help is appreciated. ---Jeff

Jeff: You probably have some problems right in the top cover. Your shift lever works 3 slideing rails in there one for reverse, 2nd for 1st and 2nd and the third for 3rd and 4th. There are detent balls and springs holding those rails in position. They can do one of two things not hold or not let go. One of the problems I've found with these detent balls and springs, is if tractor sits for long periods no oil get up around top and you get rust. Those balls and springs are still available from CaseIH.

From those rails forks go down to sliding gears, so problem could be down there as well. Just take the top cover with the shift lever out, you should see it. It is a bit tricky putting cover back on as the forks must align with gears. It can go on without forks being in alignment. Be careful on that one.

Having said all of this I am assuming A is same as SA, 100 and 130.
