My father has a farmall B with the following numbers:

1.) 8638 DE was located on drive shaft housing

2.) 6342-DA was located on the engine block.

Can anyone tell me if these numbers translate to the year the tractor was produced?

You can look for casting codes, located on the axle housings, torque tube, engine block, etc. The codes will look like 6*15*I, which would indicate a casting date of June,15, 1939. The letter I is for 39, J is for 1940, K-41 etc. Not all letters are used so it does get confusing at times but if you can find these codes on the tractor, let us know what they are and someone will be able give you a clue as to what you have.

I would like to know what letters were not used, no wonder I get it wrong sometimes.

If you find that serial number, you can go to the left of the page under Research & Info and match the year with the number.

look for a plate under the seat on the inside of the bracket. There (if it has not been removed) you will find the serial number that you can match with the year produced. They in general were made 1939-1947 I believe.
