I was at my grandpa's farm yesterday and we were working on getting his 350 running, because it had been sitting for a few years with no use. We pull started it and it ran fine, but there is a loud whining/grinding noise coming from the hyraulic system and the lines were quite warm to the touch. Is the system probably just low on fluid or is there a more serious problem here? How do you check how much fluid is in the reservoir? I removed the filler cap and there is no dipstick, just a long, dark tube that I can't see anything in.

Thanks in advance for the advice,
Nathan

Nathan: You probably should have checked the oil before you started it. If the system was dry about two min runnig would get pump hot and ruin it. That oil also lubricates the pump

Nathan,
There will be others who can help you more with the hot hyrdaulic hoses but I am guessing you have a plugged valve - more details from someone who knows more..
Now, the part I can help with. The filler hole and dipstick are in one and the same place. Under the seat, there is a large square assembly. This is the reservoir. In the middle of this there is a square headed bolt. Back this out with a crescent wrench and you will find the dipstick. Fill appropraitely with Hy-Tran.

Sean - I think he's talking about a Farmall (row-crop). While your information is correct for the IH 350 Utility, I don't think it's right for the Farmall, but others hopefully will clarify this.
