With about 12 working hours on it too, trouble free. Here are some pics and description... to get the full begining of the story click here

The hydraulic pump, the heart of the system. Also the mounting plate I had the machine shop make so that it would fit tight on the pump.

The crankshaft pulley, machined out of solid steel for longevity. Difficult to fit, but it works with a short roll pin driven in from each side. Same hole as used for hand crank to engage in. If I were to do it over I would have this pulley welded to the stock pulley.

Pump mounted on tractor, used extra H frame rail to build the mount onto. This worked good. The belt tightens with a bolt through the hole in the timing cover, pump is hinged at bottom of bracket.

A couple of shots of the torque motor for the power steering.

All done. Power steering works great, 1 finger to turn the wheel. Live hydraulic works perfect! It is faster than the belly pump by a few GPM, just what I wanted. B section smooth belt slips a little bit when the hydraulic cylinder reaches the end - cogged B section wouldn't. I have the relief valve set as low as possible on spool valve...

The hoses are what look like a nightmare on the tractor, the pump hanging out to the side isn't really pretty either - but this makes for a very useful and user-friendly machine.

Great Job! I have a '39 H in the shop that's going to get a similar setup. Looks like you used the liftall pump for the hyd. tank? Doesn't look like you had any problems mounting the pump higher than the tank.

Yes, I used the belly pump as a reservoir. I removed the pump itself and had a plate made to bolt to the reservoir. It holds about 2 1/2 gallons now. I think I need a little more capacity though - oil gets kinda warm!

Good job! Couple of questions: Did you have to remove the front bolster to install that pulley on the crankshaft? (I'm assuming you did.) Also, is your pump built to withstand the side-thrust of the belt-drive?

I've got a '49 M that may get some similar treatment one of these days. Thanks for the pictures!

Yes, the front bolster had to be loosened and moved forward to get the pulley on. If I were to do it over I'd have the machine shop weld the new pulley onto the original crank pulley.

The pump is a Cross brand that is designed for the side load of a belt or chain drive. Cost was $180 for it.

On an M you would probably hang the pump out the other side, or even mount it underneath - there is more room up there, also the lower radiator hose is on the opposite side from an H.

Bought a kit for an M from a private individual, sold the M specific parts, kept the torque motor and couplings.

Force America still produces these, along with kits for H's and M's. You can do a search for them or contact Steel Wheel Ranch, they also carry the power steering parts: steelwheelranch.com

Got Paint?? Just kidding. Thanks very much for the great picture presentation. Looks like you overbuilt some components but like you said you've got the features you want and it is user friendly. I'm with you, hydraulic hoses never look pretty, maybe if you had all aluminum lines formed to replace rubber hoses it would look better when you paint it. Just kidding. You can be justifiably proud of your project. Dickl Davis

I know it needs paint pretty badly. However, it will also need a clutch in a couple years - just plain ran out of money when I rebuilt the engine so I put the old clutch back in.

I don't know if paint would help the looks much - so much junk hanging on it these days... But, this is a working tractor that is used daily on the farm and some modifications were necessary to make it user friendly.

I should have just bought a 460 to begin with and then I wouldn't have had to do all the extras on here - the new engine and other repairs just got me sunk so deep in it $$$$ that I couldn't recover what I had in it so I made it useful! :o)

Steven, You did an excellent job on your H.
Yea a 460 would be nice. But look at it this way.
You gave that old tired and wore out H a whole new lease on life. Nothing better for a old tractor than to have a full time job.
I can just imagine that old H smile every time you start her up.

I just hope after 50 or 60 myears some one will be able to rebuild me and put me back to work :-)
