I am working on a tractor and here is my situation. I only get to work on the tractor maybe an hour or two per week. I am working on the body work. I need to use a primer that I am able to shoot on and maybe let it sit for a week or two before I get back to it to sand it. Some one tell me what is wrog with a urathatne primer. All I hear you guys talk about is the epoxy primers. I know that there are other primers out there. I am not going to use this tractor for farm use at all. This tractor is going to be a show, paraide, and tractor ride tractor only. Some one please help.

Hi Red, I would recommend the epoxy primer too.
It's more expensive, but this paint will last for a very long time. It is used now more in the automotive industry. Once it sets up it can be sanded very smooth to accept the finish coat. On bare metal once that epoxy primer adheres to the metal it is very hard to remove it. It surprises me that the farm implement companies haven't been using this since a lot of equipment is left unsheltered. A damp environment is harder on machines than their use when they are left unprotected. Good Luck, Hal

Most epoxies are not sandable, it is the surfacer that goes over it that is sandable. I imagine the equipment manufacturers are using epoxy or equivalent, most are probably using an electrostatic process. The days of no primer or the old laquer primer are long gone.

If you are going to paint it with urathane paint, then you should use epoxy primer. PPG Omni line is a very good quality system without the exorbitant price. You can prime to keep from rusting, then scuff it before final painting, and apply another coat or two of primer.
