You could put it in 4th gear & let the clutch out.

boy you have me lost and I understand the system

1st don't ever stall a engine to turn off engine this is hard on engine parts cranks and pistons rods do break people

look at a wire diagram this switch was a 1 termal switch link below

Link

It grounds out the magneto to shut it down so look to see that switch is grounded and wire from switch to that little screw on the side of the magneto

If you have an "external coil" or (redneck magneto repair job)
than you need to put a switch in the wire from the coil to its hot voltage sorce end of story !!
its that simple this will need a two termal switch

and to turn off that engine simply ground that mag termal to the frame somehow or if you just have a wire coming out of the mag and no termal then follow the wire to the coil and ground that termal to the frame if the switch fails

I rather doubt his Super A has mag. ignition. Unless Super A's were ordered with mag. they came from factory with distributor.

The early Super A's had mag ignition as standard. I don't think bat. ignition came out from IH until 1949 or so. Many tractors were fitted with the IH conversion kit to change from mag. to distributor later in life.

Al: I've never seen a Super A with mag ign. I have seen a few of then in my day. Cant say for sure what year they were. I have owned three of them in my lifetime although all were 50's models.

I supose there is a chance I've never seen a pre 49 SA, not sure on that one.

Just looked in a parts book and found serial 286222 (mid 1950) was the first for the charging system with a voltage regulator. Battery ignition likely was available from that number as well.

Early Super As had a magneto. Everything I have found indicates the change to battery ignition was mid-year 1950.

Pat: Just wondering is there a chance either some forign object is making contact back side of dash. I'm thinking something like one strand out of a wire, giving enough juice to keep it running but not enough for start up. Could be something making contact when warm and not when cold. Wires would cool quite quickly after current stops. I don't think the problem is your switch, from what describe it is definately working. Something is transfering enough current to ign to keep tractor running.

Have you by chance converted tractor to alternator using Bob M's diagrams? I had one of these that wouldn't stop months after the conversion. Light was the wrong power.

Hugh I think you are onto something here. This is definitely a shorted switch. The problem with push pull switches is that any conducting material that gets inside can contact the switch points and short it into the on position...no matter if it is off or on. No need to even test this, the meter is the engine, which refuses to turn off.

Solution: Replacement

ufo, come to think about it, this problem started after i hosed off the tractor following a particularly muddy day. is it possible there is water in this switch causing the connection to keep on?

ps.. it will not start unless it is pulled out (on position), but when i push the switch in to stop it, the tractor keeps running.

As Hugh suggests above if your tractor has an alternator conversion and the wrong size warning lamp bulb was used (or if the conversion is wired wrong) it will do exactly as you describe!

Bob: One item I could never understand, is why my 130 worked well for 6 months and then it wouldn't shut down, unless you took it to a very low idle.

Hugh - A buddy of mine has C that did the same thing. It shut off fine for several years but now it continues to run after you hit the switch (it has no warning light). Probably the electrical characteriscs of some ignition component has changed as it ages so now backfeed voltage from the alternator #1 terminal is sufficient to fire the coil with the ign switch open. ...Bob
