Thanks for the info guys. Here's another couple questions.. I'm guessing if the sn is lower than you specified.. it is a smaller 1 1/8 pto? and not the modern 1 3/8? If so.. I'm guessing an over running coupler would get it up to size?
But otherwise it is standard rotation.

This machine doesn't have a standard 3pt lift.. but does have a drawbar? ( for a drag style mower ).

What is the clutch? hand or foot?

For just grass and light broadleaf weeds of a couple feet or less ( no woody brush ) is 7' rotary mower still ok? I've found lots of 8' in my area.. but havn't found a 7'.. guess i need to look harder!

If the shaft is too small, you can buy an adapter. IH did not start using 3 point until 1960 something, perhaps a little earlier on certain models. I believe the coupler still needs the standard size shaft. If you are talking about 2 foot tall GRASS that is thick, even a 7 foot may be too big, unless you run in 1st all the time.

""I believe the coupler still needs the standard size shaft""

Over on the N forum.. we have oem 1 1/8 pto's, and have found a few suppliers that make an ORC that goes from 1 1/8 female to 1 3/8 male.

""If you are talking about 2 foot tall GRASS that is thick""

Yikes. We mow stuff like that in 1st and 2nd on our Ford-N's.. but with 5' mowers. I know that 'M' has a few more ponies than our ford N's do.

If 1's would do it.. I guess that would be fine.. assuming first gear is around 4mph? Any ideas on speeds?

The key word is thick -- like a lawn, only 2 feet tall, not ordinary grass and weeds. I was merely pointing out that you can bog anything down if conditions are severe enough. Highway depts used to use Farmall A's or Allis C's (don't know the model number) with belly mowers, worked pretty good. In general an M will easily pull a 7 foot mower, likely you will have no problems.

First gear is just over 2-1/2 mph, second is around 3-3/4, third is 4-1/4, 4th is just over 5 mph. I'd get the 8 ft mower. I used to pull a 6-ft with a Super H and I could mow off anything I could drive over in 2nd. gear, about 4 mph in the Super H. Your M should be about twice as powerful as the little Ford. If Your mowing REALLY tall/tough growth You can always raise the cutter or take less than a full swath.

Speeds seem good. I like a tad lower speeds.. Our N's are geared a bit high.. and 4th is useless in the pasture...

Back to IH.

I also mow with a 66 IH cub.. has a 44? IH belly mower. Considering that machine has 11-14 hp.. it cuts great. It is a bit tired.. but still makes a good 'big' lawnmower. I use mine to mow a 1 ac strip of ROW between my neighbors pasture and mine that the POA owns.. and I also mow the 1/4 ac ROW in front of my house with it. Makes for a better ride than a 'snapper' and has the benefits of the canopy i added.. plus a front blade that I leave set low to the ground in case anyone dumps off 'unseen' trash in the tall grass.

While some of it is tall.. it really isn't dense.

Like I say.. it doesn't bog down my N in 1st gear with a 5' mower.

How much HP is the M? If it is twice the HP of a ford.. then it is about 53-54 hp.

Seems like info on many of the letter series is hard to come by on the internet. many of the sites i visit have either incomplete or conflicting info.

( I was thinking 8' was probably close for that model.. looking at its size. )

Like you say.. if it gets too think I can make a 3/4 pass and only mow 6' swath..

Factory HP for the M is 34 drawbar, about 39 pto. The accuracy on the letter series on this site is as good as it gets--any incorrect info is soon corrected -- many of the published books have errors in them -- except those written by Guy Fay and Ken Updike, for those two, I'll call them typos. I mentioned lugging the M down because I have done it with a FIVE foot mower, conditions were very severe, should have mowed a month earlier.

Most of the inconsistencies i was refering to was from other sites.. like tractortips.com... a wealth of misinformation...

Thanks for the info.

Depends on what you are mowing, 7 ft probably ok, pto is not live. PTO is 540 rpm with standard size shaft unless the chassis serial is below 27997 (early 1941).
