HELP!! How do I check the timing on an M? My M has a bad miss and back fires. Just put a new coil (12v system)on it. The points are set at .013.

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks
Bartley

Points should be .013 if you have a magneto, .020 if you have a coil. Also make sure you son't have two of the spark plug wire mixed up, that will cause it to backfire.

Try setting the points at .020 and try it.

Any chance the timing is 180 degrees off? Has the distributor been off or could anything have changed the gearing to the dist? Pull the rotor cap off and watch the rotor while someone turns the motor over. TDC on the crankshaft mark and rotor movement should tell you if you're 180 out. Good luck Dick Davis

Dick,

What is that big lot of semi tractors along I 80 just north of the Glenwood exit? Can't believe the number of semi tractors there. I am moving from Nebraska City to Sac City Iowa and get to see that part of the country much as I haul all my tractors.

Bob, the answer is rather complex but those tractors are older ones that came off leases when the federal pollution standards got tougher. Basically operators wanted the last tractor manufactured under the old rules, so tractors just older than that were turned back in. Many of those being "reconditioned" on site are very low mileage units. One report is that they have about 3000 pullers there. So Bob what will your handle be when you reach Sac City? I remember when you were Bob in SW Iowa. Thanks again for the parts especially the aluminum caps for hydraulics. Dick
