1946 Farmall H timing (help)

Hi I am near finishing the farmall H that I spent the winter restoring as a 4H project. I know its getting fuel and spark but I believe the timing is off because I removed the distributer. Is there timing marks on the front pulley? I believe I found 2 different ones. A single hash and then a set of 2. Is that TDC when the pointer and hashes are lined up? Which is the number one cylinder? Please give me a quick run through on the timing. Judging of the project is coming up and it needs to be running. Thanks so much

The first thing you need to establish is TDC on the compression stroke, and which way the engine and rotor in the distributor turn. Take the distributor cap off and remove the spark plugs. Touch the starter so you see which way the engine turns and which way the rotor turns, then disconnect the battery cable.

Remember that the piston will at TDC on both the compression and the exhaust stroke and it's guaranteed that if you're not sure you'll have the wrong TDC. Put your thumb in the spark plug hole and turn the engine by hand (the fan is easy to turn with the plugs out) until you feel the compressed air pushing out as the piston comes up on the compression stroke. Then turn the fan a little more to line up the pointer on the pulley. Loosen the bolts that hold the distributor in place; turn the distributor until the points just open as the rotor is climbing up the cam (remember which way rotor will turn). Whatever connector is over the rotor is the one you want to connect to #1 spark plug. Make sure the other wires are in the right order. It should start.

TDC is the set of two marks, number one cylinder is the one in the front.

# 1 cylinder is closest to the radiator under the generator or altenator
