Tim, if there was a list of the all-around best IH tractors, 856 would be near the top. 806's were great, but they had a few little bugs that got worked out when it was replaced by the 856, such as the shifting. 26/56/66 series are ten times nicer to shift than an 06. Most good, average 856's are in the $6500 range.

Good solid tractor , but it probably will need a T/A and clutch , if the engind has had good care they have run many thousand hours before a rebuild is needed . The shifters get wore out but ya can fix them and make them almost as good as new with a littel tinkeren . As for price well like one said 4000 and up to 9500. I would be happy to get one for 5500 7000.

If the tractor has had any decent care at all it should be a good one. The 856 was a pretty tough old tractor, but like anything, they will wear out. I hesitate to even put a dollar figure on this tractor, but would guess somewhere in the four to six thousand dollar range.

IMHO, best tractor IH ever made. It was all downhill from there.

Around here, a decent 856 is a hot commodity.
