Gas Leak in BN

The threads into my gas tank aren't the best - they're letting gas weep out through the sediment bowl threads. It's not a steady trickle; you can see that it's wet and leaky. Can I put pipe tape or dope on it, or what would be the best way to seal the threads? Thank you.

Hi Jeff, I 'll give you the different fluids that you can use the Gasoila thread sealant on. It can be use on gasoline, oils, kerosene, diesel fuels, steam, refrigerants, natural gas, butane and propane. The Gasoila has a soft-set so you can remove fittings easily. I've used permatex, but this is better. You can get a small can that contains 1/2 pint. I think I only paid 5 or 6 dollars and you can coat a lot of fittings with this small can. Good Luck, Hal

Thanks, it looks like a good product. I'd not heard of it, but will try it. I see they have a lot of useful products available on-line. Always willing to evaluate a good product.

Hi Lee, Gasoila is the best to use on fuels and natural gas. You do not need to over tighten
fittings to stop leaks. I see the price has risen
considerably over the last year. Just like tractor parts. I also use Gasoila on water pipes
and sometimes I use teflon tape along wih it. Hal

Telon tape would be a last choice. It might work, it might not, I don't like re-doing things like that. Use an engine builders thread sealer impervious to gas and oil, something like permatex thread sealer or form-a-gasket or Harvey's TFE paste pipe sealer or El Toros gasolia if its fuel and oil resistant. No sillycone!

Hi Jeff, I've used teflon tape along with a pipe
dope called "Gasoila". If the tape alone doesn't
stop the leakage, check with a plumbing supply
store to see if they carry this pipe dope. I use
it when connecting natural gas lines. Call this toll free number to see if it's available in your area, 1-800-846-7325. It's the best that I've ever used. Hal
PS: A last resort is to remove tank and silver solder a new pipe fitting on the gas tank. You would need to steam clean it before using a torch
around the tank.

I use teflon tape on my sediment bowl threads with no problems. You want to start the tape a thread or 2 back from the very end of the nipple so that it doesn't break a piece loose and get into the fuel system.
