I have a super A tractor that we just rebuilt the moter in. Everthing was done in the moter. New valves clutch, new rings, steped head pistions, new sleeeves, everything was done. The crank was even tuned. We put the moter back in the tractorand the tractor wont start the only thing we havent done was gap the valaves it is getting spark. I dont know if it is getiing gas to the cilenders thought. Because the carb if you leave it on for too long the tractors carbuartor will poor out gas but the carb is new. The only problem I see that could have happend with the moter was from the time we took the moter apart to the time it was at the machine shop then we put it back together when we put the main bering caps back on and the rod caps back on the noches inside the cap both notches face the crank and both noches face each other. I think that is how it goes if I am wrong or anyone has any idea of what it could be I would highly appreceate it I need this tractor for cultivating.Thank you JON.

thats a comon mistake just didn't want you to over look it!!

after that pull #1 plug roll ever by hand tell you feel air coming out this is the compression stroke now put wire in hole tell you get piston to the top then make shure the rotor is pointing at #1 termal on cap or the termal that is the wire of #1 plug then note rotor turns clockwise start with the termal that the rotor is pointing at when #1 cyl is at TDC put #1 wire on that termal in the clockwise direction put #3 on next then #4 then #4 on the last one

Hi Jon, Did you ever get the Super A started? I haven't seen any followups as to how much progress
you've made. Double check that distributor and valve lash. Hal

Hi Jon, Good advice from Ron, check that valve
lash for enough clearance. They recommend .014H
on the valves. Set them to .016" until you get the tractor started. You can readjust the valves
later to .014". The valves may not have enough
clearance for the valves to close fully on the compression stroke. A valve too tight may cause the engine to miss. Good Luck, Hal

The other posts about the timing are most likely the problem, but another thing could be that if the cylinder head was surfaced the valve clearance may be too tight and not letting the valves close completely. It doesn't take long to adjust the valve lash on a 4cyl, so, since you haven't done it yet anyway, it'd be a good idea to do that at the same time you check/set the timing.

Its easy to mess up the installation of the distribuitor and get the timing off. If yours is a distributor& coil ignition, heres how to set the timing: Align the timing mark located on the flywheel with the mark on the housing so that #1 is at TDC. The timing mark is a line with "D-C" & "1-4" on
either side. Its is very faint and may be hard to find if you flywheel is dirty. Use a flashlight. Remove the spark plugs and have a helper turn the engine with a crank. The indicator on the housing is at the very bottom. You can see all
this through the hole on the bottom of the clutch housing. Once this is done, make sure the distributor's rotor is pointing toward #1 plug wire. If it's not, remove and reinstall it so that it is. Now retard the timing by rotating the distributor in the same direction that the cam rotates so that the points are closed, and with the hot/center wire of the coil near a ground,
advance the timing by rotating the distributor back the other way slowly until the
points just open and a spark occurs. (the distributor sparks when points open) Lock the distributor down there. This is the
correct setting for your engine and the rest of the timing advance occurs in the
distributor with the mechanical advance.

Exactly what EL TORO said, and.....if gas is pouring out of the carb, I think the float may not be right. Also, is it popping, backfiring, or just spinning over with nothing? Are the plugs wet?

Hi Jon, Are sure you have the distrbutor timed correctly? Remove the sparkplugs ad hold your
thumb over No1 cylinder near the radiator. Have someone crak the engine over slowly until you feel compression against your thumb. Stop cranking engine and look to see where your timing mark on your crankshaft damper pulley is. It should be close, crank the engine until these marks are aligned. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor points to No1 sparkplug. If
the rotor points to No1, since the rotor turns cw
the next plug wire should go to No3 plug, then No4 and No2. If the rotor is about 180 degrees
off. The distrbutor has to be removed and reinstalled so the rotor points to No1 on the distributor cap. Did you replace the cam or timing gear? Hal
