Clunging noise when using pto

I have a Farmall 504. When I use the pto to run my bailer, I get a clunking noise that seems to be coming from the TA area. It is not steady, but happens only when the bailer is not under load. Sounds like someone in there taping with a hammer. It is quiet as long as I am going along and picking up hay. Anyone out there have any idea what could be causing this? Thanks in advance for the help!

Tom: Like the others I wasn't sure whether 504 had the seasonal disconnect. However since it was very close behind all the tractors that did, probably very similar. As captain stated he changed his to a coupler. The couplers get noisy also if worn, the seasonal disconnects were noisy from the time they were new.

Had the same noise on a 560 and it turned out to be the seasonal disconnect clutch on the PTO. I’m not sure if a 504 had the same thing, but on the 560 on the bottom of the TA housing there is a short lever about 3 inches long with a 5/16” bolt in it. Square balers seem to raise havoc with this since the load is constantly changing. Mine broke and I ended up replacing it with a coupling like the one used further back in the PTO drive line.

Tom,
Don't know what is causing your problem. just did not want you to feel ignored :) Has this problem always happened with this tractor ? Also does it only happen with a baler or with all PTO driven implements ?
Hay balers seem to be sort of jerky on the PTO, maybe some backlash in the PTO drive is the source or maybe the sprags in the TA? Sorry I can't be more help.

Ben,

Thanks for your input. I put the pto in gear last night (tractor not running) and rocked the pto shaft back and forth and got the same noise.I figure it is like you said, backlash in the gears. I'm going to put a overriding clutch on it and hopefully this will take care of the problem. I don't want to break something.

Tom
