I was mowing yesterday when the steering mechanism broke. It didn't feel like anything snapped, just that the front wheels suddenly wouldn't turn left or right. The entire steering mechanism turns with the steering wheel including the vertical shaft in front of the radiator. Something is broken between where that vertical shaft goes into the lower chassis and where it comes out. The shaft above the chassis turns, but the lower shaft/axle does not turn left or right.

Do any of you know what I may need to fix? Is there a sheer pin in there that broke or is it more serious than that? Any advice would be appreciated.

Ace is right, you broke the vertical steering shaft, same as a H-Super H-300-350, part # 69060D, you can get one from Herschel-Adams 1 800 247 2167, their part 533265 $170 + ups.

Jeff you broke the vertical or bolster shaft just above the bottom bushing.

After rereading your post I have to agree with Aces, you need a steering pedestle. I missed the fact that your verticle shaft was turning. You may want to put in a new bushing, bearing and thrust washer at the same time.

Thanks Hoppy. Now, any good advice on where to get a new one? I've got a large tractor salvage yard near here, but it sounds like I may want new parts.

Thanks. Any idea how to fix? Is there a way to pin it, as suggested above, or do you think I need to replace it?
