Hi all,
I have a 1940 Farmall A with a Woods L503 belly mower. I'm looking for a universal V-belt that will equal the dimensions of the stock belt (Woods part #33056). Someone told me that Napa part "B255" would do the job, but I couldn't find a B255 in the Napa on line catalog.

I am pretty sure the required belt length is 256 inches.

Has anyone else found a lower-cost belt to replace Woods #33056?

Low down on belts. What you are looking for is a B 255 v-belt. Top cross section will measure .66 inches and the inside measurement is 255 inches. You can find these at just about any power transmission distributor such as Applied Industrial Trchnologies, Motion Industries, etc. Look in the yellow pages usually under Belts and Belting or Power Transmissin Products. You should save some money this way. B255 belts are stock items from most all major manufacturers. A selling price in the low $30 would allow for a more than fair profit. Almost 50 bucks is HIGH.

A secton v-belts measure .500 inches across top, B sections are .660 inches and C sections are .880 inches. The length is measure around the inside. One word of caution, make sure the belts have a cloth finish, belts with raw rubber exposed on the outside edges are too aggresive and can cause things to break.

I forgot, Woods does not manufacture v-belts. They buy from others and have them privately labled. However they are careful of who they buy from and stick with the major manufacturers.

Right here. On the search on the left, enter in your belt #. $48.86. Many on here say that they have no luck with any other belts except Woods - I guess I've had decent results. Same belt for about 5 years with about 10 hours a week mowing in the summer. Just make sure you get it tight, and don't lift the deck with the mower engaged.

Hi and thanks for your helpful replies. I am going to give one of those places a call and try to get a couple belts.

I also think I figured out why the belt was snapping. One of the pulleys on the L503 was grinding on the mower deck where it should have been separated by washers (missing!), and the metal-on-metal contact was causing it to get really HOT. I think this was weakening the belt.

The paint was even burned off where the pulley was grinding against the metal. The mower deck was starting to score. The pulley didn't turn easily anymore. So I took it off, put in a couple spacer washers, and now it turns freely and won't grind into the metal of the mower deck. Too bad I didn't notice this before.

It ought to be fine until those washers wear away... they shouldnt though, I'm going to keep them sprayed with lithium grease and replace if necessary. I guess I should also be careful not to get any grease on the mower belt.
