My Farmall M's latest trick is to jump out of gear(PTO). I was mowing pulling a 7 foot NEW Idea cut conditioner when this started. I tied a rope on the rod and help it up. It stays engaged
for a little while, but then jumps out of gear. I have never encountered this problem before. Does anyone have any ideas on what is wrong??

I have a Farmall M that I just purchase. The tractor was recently restored and is in great shape. However, I went to spread some manure and the PTO quit. This worries me for the PTO never engaged right since I have owned the tractor. A large braker bar was needed to pull on the pto engagement rod to activate. Once activated it would stay on until now. Now the rod is pulled and all it does is make a grinding noise. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks
Christopher K.

I had the same problem with my M. Mine was a 1941 model which has to two dog ears that slide into the transmission counter shaft. I tried reshaping, welding, tieing, etc. Nothing worked. I finall changed to the newer type with splines. You have to change the counter shaft (two day job) and the PTO shaft. The parts cost less than $100 and now I have a dependable PTO.

I believe the PTO on an M is a pretty simple mechanism. Two bolts, and the entire unit slides out the rear.

My first suspicion is worn linkages, then maybe bearings. If my understanding of the mechanism is correct, there is a sliding collar that joins two shafts together when you shift the PTO into gear. What's probably happening is that the collar isn't sliding very far onto the second shaft.
