My 1951 H steers harder than any other H I have ever driven. I have new front tires and have put grease in the grease nipple for the front end, and none of this helped. I have never worked on steering problems before. What should I check next? Thanks for your help.

Expanding a bit on the posts below, some possibilities: 1 - Failed thrust bearing on the bottom of the bolster pivot shaft (carries the weight of the front half of the tractor). This can cause the bolt heads fastening the lower bolster to the pivot shaft flange to scrub against the underside of the fixed bolster. Also can cause the top of the pivot shaft to rub rub on the underside of the steering gear pot cover. 2 - No lube in the steering pot - causing excessive drag in the worm gear set and pivot shaft bushing. 3 - Bent pivot shaft.

Suggest taking the load off the front wheels by jacking the tractor at the clutch housing. If the steering frees up the problem is #1. If it's still stiff suspect #2 or #3. Or simply remove the cover from the steering pot and peek inside. What you see will let you figure out pretty quick where the problem is.

Good luck!

First the obvious. Are your front wheels mounted in narrow postition or wide? Wide front wheel spacing would be hard to steer.
Otherwise, I would suspect the bolster thrust bearing between the bolster shaft and bolster housing. Another possiblity could be stiff u-joints on the steering shaft.

There are 2 bushings one under the throttle and the other just in front of the gas tank they each have grease fittings. Also there is an enlosed steering gear at the front end of the steering column. You have to take the front sheet metal off and then the cover to the gear. It may be dry. I think they were originally filled with oil, but most people fill them with bearing grease.

You guys are great! I shot some grease into the bushings that have the grease nipples, and almost instantly the steering improved. It appeared the bushing right below the throttle lever was dry as a bone, especially because the collar next to it had come loose so everything probably just dried up. I tightened that, crancked the wheel slowly back and forth a few times, and the steering is now ten times better than what it was. You guys truly are great -- I can't thank you enough! Jeff C.
