Does the frame of the tractor provide a negative or positive ground? I have started to restore this tractor and will have more questions later.

Hi Jim, The frame on your tractor provides a ground. If your tractor has the 6 volt system, they connect the positive battery (+) terminal to the tractor frame and the negative (-) battery cable hooks to your starter selnoid.

If the tractor has a 12 volt system the
negative (-) cable is bolted to the tractor frame for the ground. Check your battery to see if's
6 or 12 volt. In 1954 they were using 6 volts on most tractors and cars. Look at the generator to see if is 6 volt. Good Luck, al

Hi, I know all about the 24 volt systems on the U S military vehicles. The first car that I had 12 volt system was 57 Chevy. Tractors probably made this switch to 12 volts around this time too.
I worked 43 years at APG. Hal

El Toro,

you are right about positive grounds on earlier model tractors, but some of the 12 volts and 24 volts were positive ground, too. Some BIG military equipment is pos ground.

The U.S. manufacturers switched to negative ground for some reason, maybe it was easier to use with the computers and other electronics.
