I goofed up last night and pulled out the drive gear on my BN that comes off the cam gear and runs the magneto and governor. My IT service manual doesn't say anthing about timing it, but I assume that I just match up the mark on the gear with a matching mark I shoud find on the cam drive gear....is that right? Any other words of advice are welcome.

Take Care
Steve

The magneto does not run at the same speed as the crankshaft. You can line up the marks and still be off.
The easiest way I have found is to take out the spark plugs, put your thumb over the #1 plug hole and have somebody crank it over slowly. When the pressure from the compression pushes your thumb away, feel in the hole with a screwdriver or piece of wire for the top of the piston. Get the piston to top dead center of the compression stroke, then replace the magneto with the rotor pointing at the plug wire for #1. Should be in time then.

I don't think I made myself clear....I had the front timing cover off, to replace the front oil seal. After I installed the cover, I accidently pulled the governor / Magneto gear out. It runs off the cam gear, which runs off the crankshaft. It has to turn the same speed as the crankshaft. The problem is my IT manual doesn't explain how to time the gear....

Thanks
Steve

Red dave's method is the most basic way to get it timed to #1 with #1 cylinder at TDC and the mag rotor pointing at #1 plug wire. The mag does turn at crank speed thru the cam gear as an idler. If the mag drive lugs do not line up to the slots in the drive coupling then you need to re-mesh the mag drive gear and cam gear until the drive lines up. Another way to get TDC if you don't like dave's means is to align the DC/1-4 mark on the flywheel (viewed thru a hand hole in the clutch housing under the tractor) with a mark on the clutch cover from underneath the tractor. Although theere are marks on all the gears for timing the gear set with the front cover off you do not need to go back in there to get it back in time. If you are careful with the procedure as dave described it the timing marks on the gears will be in alignment when finished.

Steve, yeah, line up the corresponding marks on the cam to the gov, gear. I think it should be 2 dots and 2 dots. When the correct marks line up, the dots on the crank and cam line up too.
