I have a 1943 H, the transmission will shift to any gear but it locks up as soon as I let the clutch out, 5th gear is the only gear that works and it is where neutral should be.

If you do pull the transmission cover I would suggest replacing the springs for the "detent" balls on the shift rails. This will make it slightly harder to shift but will help prevent the shifter fork from sliding past the neutral position into 5th which is a chronic problem when shifting from 4th to reverse.

Thanks for the info. We were able to fix it by pulling out the shifter and re-aligning

William F. is most likely right. As the end of the shifter fork gets worn or the pin holding the shifter, it can jump out of the sliders and allow you to essentially "put it in gear twice". I have had this happen on a Super M, and just last week on my 560. Just pull the shift lever out and look and see if the sliders are all lined up with the neutral notch in the center. If not do as William suggested and with the clutch in use a pry bar/big screwdriver to line them back up. They should move fairly easy. If this happens repeatedly you should have a welding shop build up the ends of your forks (if they are worn way down) or investigate the cause further if that is not it. Good luck!

It may only be a problem with the shifter forks. If, for example, the shift lever has gotten back to the neutral slot without pulling the fifth gear slider off the end of the main shaft it could let you put it in R,1,2,or3 and be in two gears (locked) while being in 5th when it feels like neutral. Or it could be worse, but probably isn't. For starters, take the shift lever off and see can you move the shifters with the usual big screwdriver. If that doesn't make it obvious what's wrong, it's not too hard to take the cover off to see what's going on inside. Even I did it. The service manual, I&T or IH, gives good instructions.
Look at how I tied the steering post and gas tank out of the way. The wheel and axle being off was another part of the job.
