I'm thinking about puchasing the above mentioned tractor and am wondering if anyone out there could walk me through the ins and outs of deciding whether it would be worth buying. (This will be my first tractor purchase.)

The owner wants $1000. It has a mid position mower deck in pretty good shape though it seems to slip when it cuts. The main drive belt is really worn: cracked and stretched to the limit of it's adjustment. I hope its not the pto clutch that's slipping. How do I tell? The three point cylinder needs to be cleaned up before cycling it down to see if it works. (I own a smalll wood lot and could really use the three point for yarding small logs out of the woods.) It seems to be in good shape: starts right up idles smooth does'nt smoke and sound really good.
I primarily would use this tractor to mow and to pull a small trailer around my place. It would also be nice to have a small scraper blade on the back for light grading of my trails. The tractor has turf tires in really good shape.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Tracy

Wow! You guys are great. I told my pals at work today about this web site and it made them all want to go out and get computers. Thanks for all the replys.

Maybe I could ask a couple more questions:

The flow diverter valve that moves the hydraulic power from the mid deck cylinder to the three point cylinder is frozen in the down position. I have'nt bought the tractor yet but if I do can I take the cover off the housing where that plunger type valve is and try to lube it up to free it? (The three point cylinder also needs some cleanup before I try to run it in.) Where does a guy go to learn what it takes to work on something like this? Can anybody reccomend a good book on the subject? This tractor is supposed to come with the original manuals but I wonder how much help they will be...

Thanks again for your time answering my questions. I have 7 acres in the foot hills of the Oregon coast range and if there was ever anybody who needed a little "power assist" it's me. This is probably more tractor than I could ever hope to afford right now.

Warm regards,

Tracy

The three point on it makes it worth it.Mine has two brake pedals and theres not anywhere I cant go woth it even woth the turf tires,The mower deck leaves a little to be desired, but its ok.The PTO clutch on mine was taken care of all its life and is still original, but rebuild kits are available at dealer.

While the price seems to be a bit of a bargain, the one drawback I always saw to a 154 was the single brake pedal. If you don't NEED separate left and right rear-wheel brakes, go for it; if you DO, look for a 184.

This are great little tractors. On the low side, PTO and Drive clutch need frequent maintenance and the turf tires are short on traction for other jobs.
For some reason, IH put the drive clutch on the transmission instead of the engine. To stop the transmission from spinning with the clutch engaged, a brake is engaged. If this brake is not properly adjusted, you'll grind gears when you shift.
There are a coup[le of versions of the PTO clutch. At least one required the removal and disassembly to adjust it.
The the drive and PTO clutch systems were improved on the 184 models. Great tractor. Price sounds reasonable.

I would say you're getting a heck of a deal. Around here that would go for $2500 to $3000.
