'48 M - newbie questions

I have been looking to get a tractor for a number of years. An opportunity has presented itself and I have a couple of questions:

I have been told the '48 M I am going to look at only has 1 speed forward and 1 in reverse. He says it has always been this way. I am guessing this means the tranny has been broken for a long time. Should have at least 4 forward correct?

The M has a Stan*Hoist loader. My research tells me this will be power up only. Correct?

The M does not have a three-point hitch. Can it be added? Is it horribly expensive? (+$500??)

I hope to rebuild and eventually push snow and a rear deck mower.

Is an M generally more expensive to rebuild than a JD of some type? I know there are many variables to the cost discussion, but are M parts fairly easy to come by?

Sorry for what may be dumb questions. Any help appreciated.

Brian

The M should have 5 forward speeds. 1 speed sounds pretty messed up. Maybe the guy never moved the shifter over and into another gear. 1 speed wow. The loader depends on the setup of the hydraulics. A standard m doesn't have power down, but my hydraulics never worked. If it has a loader on it it probably has been made 2 way. The hitch question. There is a 3pt that is made by saginaw that cost 625. SOme people even home make there 3pts. I don't know much about jds but M's aren't that hard to rebuild, tons of people do it. As long as you have money you will always be able to find the parts.
