I bought a very good looking M from a dairy Farmer a few weeks ago. The tractor was not worked hard by the dairy farmer, Think he just used it to cut slabs and pull wagons for about 8 years. The tractor runs like a top but has a good bit of blue smoke at start up and continues until it gets good and hot and then only a little smoke. I have not worked the tractor hard at all and was wondering if this could just be because the tractor was not worked for several years like it should have been. Anyone ever had this problem and it clears up after a good working? Thanks for your input!

The heavy cloud of blue at startup is a very good indication of worn valve guides and valve stems, lots of the old Farmalls do this, and it really isn't a problem, but it isn't right either. The fact that it also still smokes a bit even after it has warmed up indicates worn rings. It is highly possible that the sleeves and pistons are also worn. It sounds to me as if the old girl needs a complete rebuild of the engine.

The surgen general says smoking is bad for anybodys health probly even an M. But any way It sounds like Rings to me. They alow a little seapage when there cold and when they warm up and exspand and seat better the seapage stops. JON
