I have an early 50s B and the front piston was stuck, water in it of course, it didnt take much however to loosen it up. I took the piston out and cleaned up the cyl. and noticed small rust pits about 2 inch down from the top of the block into the cyl. wall. Question is this, is this something that can be honed out and if so can I still use the stock piston and rings? Its the front cyl. and all the others look great so Im really not wanting to put a complete set in. If I cant hone it all out is my only option another sleeve and can I purchase just one? Will minor pitting cause me some problems down the road if I hone it good and go with it?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ken

honing does alot for little rust pits, if after honing the pits look more like stains than pits you will be fine....I would be more concerned about the ammount of taper in the bore than the pits, also clean the ring grooves in the piston before re-assembly, alot of junk can be behind the rings on a stuck piston....a new set of rings would be a wise choice....also check the wrist pin, oil it up good, and work it around to make sure its nice and free

Thanks for the info on the sleeve, but how do I check the taper on the bore?

without spending alot of money on bore gauges, you can measure the ring gap at the top of the bore (ring travel)...and then using the same ring , measure the ring gap at the bottom of the bore (ring travel)....if the measurements are close , you'll be fine.....you can also slide feeler gauges next to a piston that does'nt have rings installed on it yet, at a few different spots in the bore

I have a good used one. You mite as well change it since the engine is already torn down. For light use mite be OK to hone and use the one you have unless the pits are deep after you get done with a hone job. Send e-mail
