Timing question?

A friend just gave me A 1946 farmall H.It hasn`t run in A few years.The motor is free & everything seems to be intack.Had to replace some wiring and A broken rotor.It has A mag and I would like to check the timing.Not sure how to set the timing.Any help out there?Thanks in advance,Don.

If the rotor lines up with #1 post on the cap and trips when on TDC there is no further timing as the mag will go to 34deg advance when running. The impulse will click when you turn the engine over with a crank as each piston reaches TDC. Firing order is 1342 and the rotor turns clockwise. #1 is around 1 oclock position.

The timing is checked by turning the motor to line up a pointer on the front cover and the first of the double notches on the crankshaft pulley. Your impulse coupling should just trip.

Did you get a manual with the tractor ? They are very useful in operating and maintaining an old tractor. The IT and IH service manuals are a good start. An Operators manual will be good for keeping the tractor running. It will cover setting the timing in detail (see page 45). I like a parts book because it shows all the parts and how they go together.
