I have a 1940 H. the pto hasnt't worked in years but never needed it, now I wanted to use it so I did a little investigating and pulled the shaft, to my suprise the shaft wasn't broken but it was broken where the output shaft goes into the trany. is it easier to split the case to get it out or take the top cover off. or is there an easier way yet.

Eric, I am confused. If the shaft is broken you should be able to simply reach in and pull it out. Anyone I have ever changed is done by simply removing the rear bolts and pulling the PTO shaft out. Am I missing something here or is it that something else is broken.

You probaly know this but the 1939 through early 1941 tractors have different PTO drives than later tractors. What you will see in transmission counter shaft is a slot about 3/4 inch wide that looks a little like a broken out piece. If counter shaft is broken you will have to drop hydraulic pump, remove clutch and pressure plate (clutch may not have to come out on H do not remember), remove deck top and disassemble transmission to replace it.

thanks alot everyone. I realy appreciate all the advice.

Riverbend- really appreciat the help, it was broken about 40 years ago by my father. He never needed it for what he used the tractor for but simce then the tractor has been fine. I just wanted to fix it so I could use it to tetter, well I gues it will have to stick to raking and hauln' hay wagons

NDS- Your informatin was perfect. the little slot is what was broken. either side was snapped right off. well I gues I will wait till winter to get into that prodject. Thanks!

Splitting the tractor won't make it any easier, probably better to remove the top cover. That way you will be able to see where the broken parts went, and check that everything else is okay.

so it is easier to see what broke that way but I can already see what brke through where the pto comes out it is right at the end of the shaft that goes from the tranny to the rear end so I can see it where it broke but how do I get that shaft out to measure it up and replace it?

Please, I am not familiar with text messaging. Use capitals and punctuation.

I would suggest that you buy a set of manuals before you go any farther. They will give directions on how to get the pto shaft out.

You might want to take a closer look because most of this stuff is pretty tough, usually it takes a lot of force to break something. You can see the end of the shaft, but how is everything else i.e. the countershaft bearing ? If you are going to fix it you might as well fix it right the first time.

Once you have it apart, try a tractor junkyard, or the dealer for parts.
