Some basic SMTA questions

1) 6 or 12 volt, pos. or neg. ground?

2) Should the starter switch be located on the starter using a pull rod or a mounting bracket using your foot to engage?

3) Where should the Voltage Regulator be mounted?

4) How do I use the TA? I pulled the TA lever to the rear and it locked, but the speed of the tractor didn't change. Is this a TA problem or a adjustment problem?

Anyone parting out a SMTA with parts to sell? I would like to get prices on seat pan, batt box, clutch pedal, and batt to starter cable for starters. Thanks for your time.

I have a SMTA tractor that I put power steering on and really enjoy using it around the yard. If you E-mail me I'll tell you how I Can fix your clutch pedal and wore out pedal shaft. Enjoy your new tractor. MN charlie

1. If original will be 6 volt positive ground. Should have a generator, if has an alternator is probably converted to 12 volt negative ground.
2.Should be pull rod to engage starter, switch is mounted to top of the starter.
3. Voltage regulator is mounted on the steering post near the bottom, engine side.
4. Could be TA problem. Usually TA fails such taht foreward speed is ok, will slip when pulled to rear. Try pulling handle back and then hitting brakes. Could also be adjustment. Adjustment procedure is complicated as it involves clutch linkage also. You need to have an operator's manuel to do it right.
When I got my SMTA it had a worn out after market seat. I bought the seat with mount and battry box that was sort of decent from a salvage yard. Late super M and some number series had same seat and battery box. I would get new cables from battery to starter. If it is 6 volt use heavy cables. I ran mine across the floor board in flexible conduit to avoid damage from feet etc.

Thanks for all the info. The SMTA I have still has the 6 volt gen., the volt reg. is hanging by wires by steering post, and has a 12 volt neg. ground batt installed. But it runs! What gauge batt. cable should I use? Do you have any idea how many SMTA and SMTAV's are still around?

Guys here have talked about using a 6 volt generator and 12 volt regulator and say it will charge 12 volts. I have not tried that but perhaps the previous owner did since the regulator is hanging. I switched mine to 12 volts with an alternator when I got it. You mentioned the starter switch also, I changed mine over to use a start button because the switch on the starter wasn't working right. I don't know how many are still around. They seem to be a sought after collector item. I got mine quite by accident, a retired farmer had it and it was stuck. I knew nothing about farmall and thought it was a super M from what the guy said. I paid $100 for it with aftermarket 3 point. Figured I would sell parts but then got to working on it and have now gone through engine, Torque amplifier, and PTO. Does yours have the "christmas tree" hydraulic valve for 2 way hydraulics? A lot of these seem to have bad tas, usually ramp and rollers go due to misuse and they slip on the low side(lever back). Get an operator's manuel for it and the parts book and service manuel also help. As far as battery cable get as heavy as you can find. It is a fairly long distance from battery to starter, the longer the distance the larger the cable you need. I have been glad I converted to 12 volts. It starts really good and I run lights on it and sometimes on my baler. 12 volt lights are a lot easier to find and the alternator keeps up easily. For me it is a user, and I don't worry about originality. I kept the generator and regularor in case someone wants to put it back on someday. You can e mail me if you have other questions. A $100 dollars! Do you know of any more at that price? No christmas tree on mine. Should the TA have been lubed? If so how do I lube it? I'll take your advice and order a set of manual today.
