I just noticed I have about a 3 inch crack starting on the very bottom of the clutch housing on my H. I thought about drilling a hole at the end of the crack to stop it and try to get it welded. Is this the best way to fix this problem? Any Ideas? I would like to stop it before it grows larger.

BB,

Sounds like someone has tried their darndest to break this tractor in two with a loader.

I'm with K-Mo on this one. Replace the housing.

Just replace it. "H" clutch housings are a dime a dozen. I've replaced clutch housings on H, Super M and 240s. I've paid $50-75 from the commercial salvage yards.

BB, Before you get too deep in the idea of arc welding the casting you should read the 3 or 4 pages on the lock-n-stitch web site ( quite educational ). It is a how to weld cast and which is the best process. I do quite a bit of acetylene/oxy cast iron welding and below is a link to some pictures of cast iron repair and some other things. http://www.locknstitch.com/CastIronWelding.htm

BB, First don't use the tractor till it is fixed!
Farmers /Ranchers have been welding castiron for years. Short of tearing this tractor down and replaceing the Clutch Houseing then welding will be your best opition IMO. If you arn't confident in your abilitys then contact a local welder, He will have the skill and tools readily available to do the job. This may be a job, left to a pro-welder.
I agree with you, drill a hole at the end of the crack. Then V-out a groove to weld in then as my ol welding tracher taught me, weld an inch then peen it till cold, then weld another inch and repeat the process till done.
Use a high quality cast rod like NI-cast 55.
Hope this helps,
John A.

I'd do like you say, drill a stop in the crack, then I would drill and bolt a good strong strap of steel across it for strength. In my opinion trying to weld on it would probably not work out too well.
