I just traded for a Woods RM-990 7 1/2' finish mower. It is a '99 model and has the earlier style gear box. It has sat at the dealer since last year due to the gear box lower seals leaking. I talked with Woods Tech Dept and they say it probablly blew them out due to the dip stick breather being plugged. The dealer is fixing it all up and adding a front roller and it already has some chains. Does anyone have one of these?? All I have heard is good things so far! Do you think it would build up enough pressure to blow out the seal?? Thanks, Kent

I contacted the dealer and asked what tractor he had the mower on. I guess my facial expression must have been pretty bad as he kinda looked at me funny when he said a 4020 I thought he was joking but he was serious. I now am wondering if he abused it some how with too big a mule?? I guess either way they are making the gear box right and will stand behind it. When I talked with Woods they said I could rebuild my box for @$325 and I could put on the new style box with a upgrade kit for under $300, that seems a no brainer which to buy if the box is trashed. Thanks for the ideas and help. Kent

Kent: Any gear box with a breather will blow seals if the breather becomes blocked. Chevy trucks used to be on top of the list for that with rearends. If you saw oil around the brake drums, could almost bet the breather was pluged.

yeah years ago in my dads shop we used to get lots of fords in the winter, the pcv would freeze and they would blow oil out the rear main.bring em inside and let em warm up and they were good to go.i could never figure out why fords have so much condensation in thier motors, nobody elses motors had the problem.and it seemed like if they ran pennzoil it made it worse,????anyway when pressure builds up somethings got to give and the seals are the weak link.
