I think the SM has the C-264 engine, and the M has a different one, I was at a guys house the other day and he pointed out a 264 on his super M engine, where is the # on the M, I cant find it.

FK 99% of M will have a 4 digit casting # on right side of block followed by 2 letters most of time.SM will have 6 digit cast # followed by R1.
It will also have C264 on block. Most if not all
original M engines will not have C248 on block.
Im refering to original blocks on above.Late M used same large journal crank as SM.IH and others
sold 4 inch pistons and sleeves for M which made it 264 also made 4 1/8 for SM to make it 281 cubic
inch.To make a M block larger than 4 inch bore you have to bore block or run without sleeves.

A lot of M's had the 264. The super M only added a 4 inch fire dome piston from the factory. I have an M that has a 41/8th piston setup. Other than for a faster geared transmission, live hydraulics and disc barkes in the later SM tractors, there isn't much difference between them and the M. The SMTA now, is a lot more tractor, although that is still a 4 inch firecratered piston.

I would have to disagree. M's came standard from the factory with a C-248 engine, which included 3 7/8" flat top pistons. Most M's had C-248 cast into the right side of the motor just above the crankcase vent. The only tractors factory equipped with the C-264 were Supers. The C-264 was different from the C-248 in more than one. The main bearings were bigger, the head was different, the carb was changed, the pistons were larger, they were rated to run higher rpm's, just to name a few, and made a heck of alot more power.
