Hello there, I am wanting to get a sickle mower to put on my B Farmall. Can someone suggest what model I should be looking for? I will be mowing the road side and would like to trim a hedge in the upright position (if possible). Thanks, Mike

Mike: I don't think you would want the weight of either an A-23 or a side mount balanced head mower on the side of a B. In my opinion the A-23 were much to heavy for the Super A. I only ever saw one, and there were a lot of patches and welding on tractor, in my opinion the direct result of mower weight. The side mount balanced head mower was built for tractors like 300, 350, 504, etc. much too heavy for the small tractors.

You may be able to find a trailer model balanced head mower, but again you need hydraulics. You could buy trailer pitman mowers with rope lifts. I rather doubt balanced head mowers had rope lifts.

Hugh, I had one of those A-23 mowers and I agree, it was too heavy for the Super A. In fact it was too heavy for itself, as the lift cable was a constant maintenance problem, plus the touch control would barely lift it. Needless to say, I did not keep it long. However, as a youngster, I recall seeing a lot of Super A's in highway mowing service using those mowers. I wonder if they were really satisfactory for the service?? I also agree that a mower like that would not be good on a B with the tricyle front end. I don't know if IH made one for the B or not.

Paul: I remember talking with a road dept guy once, about these A-23 mowers. He told me they once got a Super A with the C-22 farm mower by mistake. After that he said all their orders were for C-22 with 6' bar. He said if you didn't overload the SA with weight, amazing where it would mow.

He went on to say, if you got the SA stuck in soft conditions, and it would cross much softer ground than most tractors. The SA was light enough that using a long chain, one could usually pull it out with a service truck from hard road. You could fill the scars with a shovel. He said the monsters they buy today, takes major equipment to tow them out of being stuck, then a truckload to fill the hole.

The mower for the Super A that will cut vertically is the AI-23 highway mower. I don't know if there is an equivalent for the B or not. I suppose it would be the B-23. This is not a balance head mower, but rather has a short pitman stick and when you pick the bar up, it rotates around the flywheel, not the end of the sickle as is normal for farm hay mowers. I do know that you would not want to be taking this thing on and off the tractor very often, as it is heavy and difficult to mount it. Also, you would need hydraulics to lift it. I don't think you could do it with a hand lift. The AI-23 on the Super A uses the lift all system and it's a strain for it even with the helper spring that is part of it.

Now, I'm not the most experienced person here [understatement of the week!], but my ol' Pappy always told me that the ONLY kind of sickle-bar mower that would cut vertically would be what's known as a "balanced-head" mower...and I don't know what might be available that way to fit a B.
