Helllo,
I was wondering if anybody could tell me how much horsepower a IH 966 has. Thank-You.

Actually, if you get down to a gnats butt--the newer ones have 100.8 according to the IH manual that I have. The older ones were 95 I'm pretty sure, would have to look for sure. However, as easily as those pumps are to turn up--who know's for sure? Likely on a 966 it may not have been turned up, seems like the 10's 14's and 15's were the ones that were cranked.

It depends. Early 966's were rated at about 96 hp. Later 966's were about 105. Look at the tag on the injection pump. If rated speed is 2400 RPM, you have an early model. If it is 2600 RPM, you have a late model.

Hi Fred,

Depends on the tractor, the year and who has twisted what, I 'spose.

IH rated the 966s at 98hp and the 1066s were 125.

Fred, About 110 hp. Though mine, I think may be a little more. Judging from how well it handles a 13 shank chiesel plow.

Say what? Forgive me but I am a little skeptical. A thirteen shank chisel plow with a 966?? You either are pulling it in sand or you are only going a couple of inches deep. You would be lucky to pull a seven shank in our drummer soils. I don't mean to offend but this claim sounds a little fishy.

Steve, I can understand your scepticism here.
I am in Central Texas, Here at the house, my soil is a Ecrack clay ...A little brother to The Houston Black Clay that we have here,
it is clay mixed with calichie outcrops and limestone rocks., and at my dads home place It is Lampasas River bottom sand.
In both places I can pull 13 shanks 8 in deep.
In the words of Will Sonnet in the TV Western of the same name, "No Brag, Just Fact"
