This is a solid gear tractor with TA, not hydro. What is the trick to adjusting the shifters so they line up? As long as I just use 1st and reverse I am ok, but trying to get into one of the others is tough. I think thecollars at the top don't line up right so the lever won't move in and out. Tractor has not apparently had the most love during it's life. At least the lower dash panel is gone so you could conceivabley adjust the colars.

A few years ago I made an upgrade for this shifter, just search under "544 shifter".
Unfortunatly the dowel pin under the dash has loosend up so I don't have the complete ansure yet.

Dan: The shaft that goes from shift lever through the shifting linkages has a pin through it that protrudes about 1/4 inch on either side of shaft. That pin as you move lever from side to side, lines up with each of the 3 shift linkages. This becomes worn and pin gets loose, then it protrudes too far on one side, thus you can't change from one of the 3 linkages to the next. Next step is the pin falls out then you can't shift anything.

There is a kit you can buy from CaseIH to repair this. Not exactly sure just what the kit contains. When I did mine IH had not yet developed the kit thus I had to buy from parts. I replaced the shaft from shift lever through the linkages plus the pin that goes through it. That was 30 years ago and it happened at about 6,000 hours on tractor. 15 minute job to change it with quite simple tools.

At each linkage there is a hole you line pin to, and drive it out with punch, pull the old shaft. Replace with new shaft line it up for pin replacment and put new pin back. It may take a bit of trial and error to get pin centered.

Thanks again for the help. This is a neighbors tractor that I borrowed to use on his Heston haybine. Last time I used it the TA shaft was locked up and I ended up breaking the shaft So I replaced it. Also got glow plugs to work that time as he had been using eather. Think each time I use it it goes back better than it came. I'm sure as soon as I get it really fixed up he will move.At least the linkage and collars under the dash get plenty of lubrication as there seems to be a slight oil lead from the steering.

my 656 was doing the same thing as you describe.it would go into reverse and first just fine, but wouldnt go into any other gears because the end of the shifter wouldn't stay in the notched bar that slides left and right on the bottom of the shifter. first i took the shifter out, and greased the whole mechanism really well.. then i put a thin fender washer in where the pin holds the shifter in place..i replaced the pin with a bolt and nut..not the fanciest fix but its simple, and has worked perfectly for a year now...
